As a little girl growing up in Africa, Mavis Kapumba always had her sights on helping others. Now, as a District Director of Clinical Services, she has the opportunity to make an impact on the lives of those she serves.
“As a little girl I always had a clear vision of where I wanted to be in life,” Mavis explained. “So this has not been a surprise for me. It has always been something that I wanted to do.”
Although she’s confident in her abilities now, that wasn’t always the case. Mavis has been with Brookdale for more than 20 years, and has grown with the company. Despite being comfortable with her role now, Mavis says her first experience in senior living was something that she’ll never forget.
“I remember the first day of work I cried because I had no idea what I was stepping into,” she said. “I was helping a resident, and after that I just broke down because I was overwhelmed with emotions.”
After overcoming her early challenges, Mavis excelled in her role and now oversees Brookdale communities in both Wisconsin and Illinois. She says she’s always willing to help when she’s needed and doesn’t shy away from a challenge. To Mavis, serving others isn’t something she sees as a job. She describes it more as a calling, explaining that she continues to stick to the plan she mapped out for herself as a child.
“I love to take care of people,” Mavis said. “For me, it’s not about the paycheck. As long as I’m taking care of people and loving what I do, that’s what matters.”
