James Jennings is a U.S. Marine who served during the Vietnam War. Arnold Compas, a World War II and Korean War veteran celebrated his 102nd birthday at Brookdale South Bend senior living community.

Three Korean War and two Vietnam War veterans were recognized for their service at the Legacy Medallion Presentation at Brookdale Roseburg on Saturday.

Associates at Brookdale Urbana said their Veterans Day program is one of the best events they put on all year and that it always draws a big crowd.

About 20 veterans at Brookdale, a local senior living community, were honored with roses, certificates and accolades. A flag ceremony, the Kellogg High School JROTC, and cake were part of the hourlong event attended by about 25 Brookdale residents.

Fourteen military veterans gathered in a room at Brookdale Grayson View in Selinsgrove Friday afternoon to reminisce and receive thanks from staff and visitors.

Currently, Traverse is the head chef at Brookdale Saginaw. That’s where he met John “Butch” Doyle and they began swapping Navy stories but now mostly talk about food, Traverse said.
