Decades after graduation, a group of Vanderbilt women have found friendship, shared memories, and Commodore spirit at a local assisted living community.

Brookdale Senior Living recently crowned this year’s Chautauqua County Senior Sweetheart, Elaine Crossley. The Senior Sweetheart is an event that Brookdale does every year on Valentine’s Day to honor a local senior who is involved in the community and likes to help others.

He even traveled to Vietnam with Bob Hope to entertain American troops during the war. Phyllis Walsh celebrated her 100th birthday on Feb. 12, 2025. She commemorated this auspicious day by doing what she does every Wednesday morning — bowling in her Wednesday league at Fox Bowl in Wheaton.

Alice Goodwin just celebrated her 103rd birthday at Brookdale New Braunfels. Her secret to longevity is through playing games, taking lots of naps, and enjoying milk and cookies.

Next month will be Bruce and Kathie’s anniversary, only she doesn’t remember as much anymore. Kathie suffers from Alzheimer’s and lives at Brookdale Austintown, a local memory care facility. Bruce visits Kathie every day to spend time with her.

Margaret, 96, and Kenneth (Ken), 97, Williams, and Esther, 82, and William (Bill), 84, Goodchild have a combined 147 years of marriage — the Williams will celebrate their 75th anniversary in May and the Goodchilds will mark 60 years in October.

Ahead of Valentine's Day, a pair of seniors at Brookdale Tarpon Springs are proving age does not matter when it comes to finding love. The couple bonded at happy hour, and their love grew from there. The couple admits they weren't looking for love, but what they found was special.

Sheryl and Richard met at a diner when Sheryl was 15 serving tables for the first time. She accidentally spilled coffee on Richard, which led to an instant connection. They have now been together 50 years and live together at Brookdale Eddy Pond East.

Valentine’s Day is here and a local senior living community says a “new couple” is an example that love can blossom at any age. Brookdale Barberton is sharing the story of residents Lee Schreckengost, 93, and Eileen Watson, 87. The couple, they say, “truly embodies the spirit of Valentine’s Day.” They met three years ago when Eileen first moved in and have been together “ever since.”
