Maricela got “here” more than 25 years ago, applying for a housekeeping position at the community when she was just 21 years old. At that time, English was not Maricela’s first language, “It was feeling like a nice welcome, but I was very nervous,” she recalled.

While books, television and newspapers helped Maricela improve her English through the years, she said it was also the residents who stepped in to lend a helping hand. “I have a lot of stories about our residents. There was one resident who was so proud to teach me how to say ‘dust pan,’” Maricela said.

As Maricela continued to work at the community, it became clear she was a hard worker and a rising star. In 1999 she was promoted to Director of Housekeeping. Talking about that promotion now, more than 23 years later, Maricela is still humble about her role.

“When I come here, I help with any of the events. For me it’s not like ‘I am the director’ I am another team player in my department,” Maricela said.

Growing up with her grandparents in Mexico City gave her a true appreciation and understanding of seniors. “For me this is a blessing to work here because when I see any senior, I feel like we are here for a reason. Everything I know since I was little, I learned it from seniors,” Maricela paused for a moment, “My grandparents were the best.”

Her positive attitude and work ethic are things she also works to share with new associates. “Brookdale gave me the opportunity to grow up, to stay here, to be someone,” she added, “I feel so blessed, I cannot see myself being in another place. I was talking to my coworkers and said ‘I’m planning to be 71 and I’m going to be here still working.’”
